Lazy, Hazy Days of Summer

Every July, the light on the island shifts around six in the evening — golden, slanted, unhurried. It’s the light that makes the shingled entrance at Morning Glory Farm on Martha’s Vineyard look like something out of a painting — hanging baskets of petunias spilling over the porch rail, the whole place looking like a postcard.

Inside, the shelves are stacked with fresh produce, pastries still warm from the oven, buckets of just-cut flowers by the door.

This is the season for slowing down — for the color of a peach at its peak, the smell of salt air in the morning, a porch that feels different in the evening light than it does at noon. It’s the season painters have always loved best, when the outdoors practically begs to be captured on paper.

Summer Is Pie Season

Nothing says summer like a good pie. The berries are at their best right now, and there’s something satisfying about baking one with the windows open, letting the breeze move through the kitchen while it cools on the sill.

If you’re looking to build out your own pie repertoire this summer,

The Book on Pie by Erin Jeanne McDowell has become my go-to reference — the chapter on decor and toppings alone makes it worth the shelf space, whether you’re going for a simple lattice or something a little more showstopping.

Grab a sketchbook or a paperback, and find a spot with a little shade. A portable easel and a small watercolor set make it easy to set up almost anywhere — a porch railing, a beach blanket, wherever the light looks good that day. Toss it all in a canvas tote along with a good beach read, and you’ve got everything you need for an afternoon that asks nothing of you.

Shop Beach Read - Elin Hilderbrand, The Identicals

This is what island summers are made of. Long days, quiet mornings, evenings that stretch until the sun finally sets over the water.

Here's wishing you a slow, lazy, hazy sun-soaked summer.

Stay breezy 🌊

Next week, we're heading out on the water — flies, boats, and a little island fishing tradition.
