Summers in Beach Haven

Beach Haven in summer — the days run together. Mornings start slow: coffee on the deck, towels and chairs loaded up, then down to the beach for the day. Overhead, every so often, a plane passes by trailing a banner — a sight and sound that’s been part of summer here for as long as anyone can remember.

Some afternoons mean bikes instead — riding up and down the side streets with no real destination, just something to do before dinner. Other days are set aside for fishing and crabbing off the bulkhead along Barnegat Bay, where a few crabs end up in the bucket for a closer look before going back in the water.

Once a summer, there’s a day trip up to Barnegat Light to visit Old Barney—  a lighthouse that's been guiding fishing boats safely home since 1859. Some brave souls make the climb to the top for the thrill and the view. Others are just as happy taking in the scenery and the inlet breeze before  heading over to Viking Village — one of the East Coast's premier commercial fishing ports, founded in the 1920s by Scandinavian immigrants. Watching the boats come in with the day's catch never gets old.

The drive back down the boulevard has its own rhythm — windows down, radio on, sun beginning to fade. By the time you’re back in Beach Haven, everyone is hungry. It’s either a slow seafood dinner followed by a sunset boat ride, or an evening walk over to Bay Village for shopping and a sweet treat — an ice cream cone, and a stop at the fudge shop — there's nothing quite like watching fudge being made in the big copper kettle — a few games of skee-ball at the arcade, maybe a ferris wheel ride while the sky changes color and the gulls circle overhead.

Not every day is a beach day — sometimes the sky turns grey and the rain moves in, and that’s when it's time to head to the hobby shop. Pick out a project: decoupage scallop shells — perfect little gifts; spend the afternoon  stringing beads, fill a shadow box with shells collected all week.  And for anyone who needs a serious project, the USS Constitution Ship in a Bottle is a rainy afternoon well spent — especially fitting this year as America turns 250.

After all the activity, the day just quietly ends. Someone falls asleep on a lounge chair under the stars, the gentle sound of the surf in the background. That's the epitome of a summer day in Beach Haven.

This week’s Breezy Edit has plenty to help set the scene for long beach days and easy summer evenings — head over to shop the look.

Next week on Breezy Blue Home — the Fourth of July is almost here, and this year it’s a big one. America turns 250, and we’re celebrating the way we know best: on the coast, with good company, a beautiful table, and fireworks over the water.
