June is the month of celebrating the people you love. If you’re hosting a bridal shower or a graduation party this season, this guide is for you. And if you haven’t seen this week’s The Breezy Edit yet — [The June Breezy Edit: Coastal Entertaining] — it’s full of finds to make any summer celebration feel special.
Outdoor Entertaining — What Every Party Needs
Before we get into the specifics, a few things that apply to every outdoor summer party regardless of the occasion. Spread your stations and seating throughout the space. When food is in one place, drinks in another, and seating somewhere else entirely, guests move naturally and the party breathes. Everything in one spot and it stalls.
In the heat, food safety matters. Skip mayo-based pasta and potato salads in favor of vinaigrette versions — they hold up beautifully. The same applies to anything with eggs or cream — when in doubt, leave it out.
A drink station with glass dispensers filled with lemonade, infused water, and something sparkling keeps guests refreshed without anyone needing to ask.
A sunscreen and bug spray basket near the entrance is one of those details guests notice and appreciate. Place covered, clearly labeled trash and recycling bins away from the food — your space stays clean and odor free. If there’s a pool, consider hiring a lifeguard. It’s the peace of mind that lets you be a guest at your own party.
Have a Plan B
Every outdoor celebration needs one. If the party can’t move inside, know your options before the week of. Check with local tent rental companies early — find out what’s available in your area and how far in advance you need to book. Scout an alternate covered location — a neighbor’s barn, a club, a covered pavilion nearby. Weather is the one thing you can’t control, and having a backup plan costs nothing but a few phone calls. The host who thinks ahead avoids disappointment later.
The Bridal Shower
Think garden party. A long table under a pergola or shade sail draped in linen, mismatched vintage china, low arrangements of garden roses and hydrangeas in pitchers and mason jars. Bare feet in the grass optional. Let the setting do the work.
For food, dainty and elegant — finger sandwiches on good bread, cucumber and cream cheese, smoked salmon, chicken salad made with Greek yogurt. A tiered stand of petit fours and macarons. Nothing that requires a fork.
One signature cocktail keeps things simple and special. A classic Aperol spritz, a lavender lemonade with Prosecco, or a rosé sangria with fresh peaches and mint. Set up a self-serve station.
Baskets are everything at an outdoor shower. A lined basket for cards, a handled basket of pashminas or light wraps for when the breeze picks up, rolled napkins at the food station. Place the gift table away from the food — dress it with a length of linen and a small bouquet near a pretty hedge or fence. Have a helper designated to collect wrappings as gifts are opened so it doesn’t take over the space.
A pretty guest book goes a long way — linen covered, a good pen, a prompt on each page like “advice for the bride” or “a wish for their first year" — or ask guests to bring a favorite family recipe to tuck inside. It takes five minutes to fill out and becomes something she keeps forever.
And don’t forget — no bridal shower is complete without the ribbon hat. Save every bow from every gift, have someone thread them through a paper plate, and present it to the bride to wear for the rest of the afternoon. It’s silly, it’s tradition, and it never gets old.
The Graduation
The graduation party has one job — make the graduate feel celebrated and give everyone a reason to linger. Keep it relaxed, keep it fun, and think about the details that make it feel like more than just a backyard party. For food, think portable and casual — pinwheel wraps, chicken satay or kabobs, things guests can grab and keep moving.
For sweets, individual cupcakes or cookies decorated with the graduate’s school colors or the college they’re heading to in the fall are easy to serve and personal. A big galvanized tub filled with ice and bottled drinks is the workhorse of any backyard party. Sodas, sparkling water, lemonade — guests help themselves and you’re not running back and forth to the cooler all afternoon. Every beach house should have one.
Large bins of rolled towels near the pool or beach entrance are a thoughtful touch guests won’t expect. A photo booth is easily rentable or simple to pull together yourself — a fun backdrop, a basket of props, a “Class of 2026” sign. Old classmates who haven’t seen each other all year will find their way there.
Pass around the yearbook for signatures, or place a slotted wooden box where guests can slip in handwritten notes — a favorite memory, a piece of advice, something funny from freshman year. Tie it with the graduate’s school colors and present it at the end of the afternoon. Better than any gift.
June is also the month of bachelor and bachelorette parties, anniversaries, and every other gathering that deserves a beautiful summer evening. Whatever you’re celebrating this month — make it memorable.
Stay breezy 🌊
